Latinos Unidos Conference

A high school student club plans to host a district-wide conference to promote higher education and cultural awareness in the Santa Maria Valley.

The fifth annual Righetti High School Latino Unidos Club meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. inside the RHS cafeteria on March 18.

For the first year, the Warrior club has joined forces with PVHS and SMHS students to create and operate workshops and other team-building activities. The students recently met at the District office to hash out ideas and the agenda.

Hundreds of students and parents will attend the event designed to highlight “unity” throughout the SMJUHSD. The benefits of attending colleges or universities, available funding and the tools needed to be successful are part of the program too.

Club Advisor Patricia Villalobos said the atmosphere will allow students to explore topics “relevant” to them.

“I see this as a way to inspire positive change and create a legacy of collaboration and leadership in our local youth,’’ Villalobos said.

Club President Estela Navarro agreed, adding there are more opportunities for young people when they hold a college or university degree.

“It will empower and encourage students all across the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District to thrive, unite, and pursue educational goals,’’ Navarro said.

Delta and GUSD’s Kermit McKenzie Junior High School students also will attend. Bus service has been arranged.
