Santa Maria High School’s Sindy Valle Davila has been selected as a Horatio Alger Scholar, making her one of 107 students from more than 40,000 applicants.

The national $25,000 scholarship is awarded to students who have experienced challenges but ultimately overcame them to become successful leaders, according to Saint Career and College Specialist Kimberley Washington.

“This is going to help me pursue my dream of becoming a teacher,’’ Sindy said.

Washington believes Sindy was also chosen because of her superior service and academics.
