The richness and beauty of Santa Maria Valley’s farmland is now on display at the SMJUHSD main office in mural created by art teachers and helpers.

Unveiled at a June 11 school board meeting, it covers the wall inside the Professional Development Center at the District Office, directly behind the area used by school board members.

The 40-foot by seven-foot creation features poppies, mountains, a field worker hauling strawberries and other images capturing the area.

The art team included teacher Merrie Okie-Goldin from Santa Maria High School, teacher George Karamitsos from Pioneer Valley High School, teacher Melissa Johnson from Righetti High School, teacher Elesa Carlson from Righetti, Chelsea Greene (SMHS Visual and performing Arts), Tommy Ruiz (AP Art Student) and Nicole Johnson (artist/helper).

The group of art teachers and helpers, who plan to continue their efforts throughout the District and community, said they found the unity of working together inspiring.
