Business economics students at SMHS recently mastered their personal finances during the 10-week simulation entitled “H&R Block Challenge”.

The lesson allowed the Saints to examine and select future 401k plans, check and credit card account options, cell plans and make other decisions. The students managed their budget, set up online payments and responded to “real-world” situations. Also, they experienced how penalties and interest accrues in both a negative and positive aspects.

“I learned how to budget my money and this helped me to be responsible in paying bills,” said student Alyssa Olpindo.

“This simulation was very important because it taught me how to budget my money,’’ said student Sylvester Espinoza. “I learned how to pay bills on time and also save my money for retirement.”

“This was the most important concept learned in my business econ class, said student Oscar Rodriguez. “It helped me spend my money as an adult will.’’

Espinoza finished in the top two percent and Rodriguez was in the top eight percent. Both received certificates of achievement.

“Although high schools must teach personal finance in the senior year, this particular simulation really gave the students an insight to the daily challenges of paying bills on time without penalties,’’ said business teacher Cindy Quaid.
