SMJUHSD Starts School August 17

School starts August 17 in a non-traditional way at SMJUHSD, as COVID-19 forces the continuance of distance learning at least until December when a re-evaluation of returning to school safely occurs.

“I want to wish everyone the best year considering the circumstances,’’ said school board president Amy Lopez. “It will be different, but staff are working hard to make learning engaging for our students. We all want our students to return, but it must be safe for them to do so.’’

Teachers returned this week for several days of professional learning activities in preparation for a better implementation of the distance learning model. The professional development includes additional technological training designed to help educators engage students with the curriculum.

Freshman students began picking up schedules, ID cards, tablets and textbooks last week. The rest of the students have also begun retrieving the necessary materials.

A new free and reduced meal plan was finalized and released this week. It includes meals at RHS, PVHS and SMHS as well as eight school buses delivering meals for pickup at different locations throughout the neighborhoods every day of the week.

The district’s fall 2020 reopening plan is posted on the website. It includes information about the district learning model and plans for when and if there is a return to hybrid or the traditional model. There is also COVID-19 information from the California Department of Public Health.  Any questions about the return to school should be directed to the student’s school campus, as all of our schools’ offices are open.
