Help high school students take a lifetime of educated swings by participating in the Inaugural Santa Maria Saints Golf Classic.

The charity event benefits the Santa Maria High School Boys and Girls Golf Teams. The noon fundraiser takes place at the Marshallia Ranch Golf Course near Vandenberg Air Force Base.

SMHS Golf Coach, Jay Cheney, hopes to have 50 or 60 golfers tee off and raise a few thousand dollars. The young golfers need the donations for new equipment, entry fees, transportation and lessons from professional golfers, off-season play and to learn about the sport's newest technology.

Coach Cheney believes the game teaches his students honestly, integrity, and responsibility.

"They have absolutely nobody to blame but themselves when things go wrong.” said Cheney, who also teaches social studies. “It's a lesson for life.''

SMHS senior, Diana Ordaz, said all the players are excited and eager for the fun and dedication to start again.

"I am so glad I came out for golf because I am learning so much,'' Ordaz said. “It's one of the best things I have ever done.''

For more information and how to join this fun cause, please contact Mr. Cheney at 925-2567 ext. 3522 or via email at jcheney@santamariahighschool.org. Play costs $100 per golfer and donations are also appreciated.
