SMJUHSD Leadership Development Day January 23 back button

SMJUHSD students are being offered leadership skills they can use to become more productive citizens at school and in the community.

A “Leadership Development Day” workshop will be held Friday, January 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Ernest Righetti High School gym. More than 200 students from Righetti, Santa Maria and Pioneer Valley high schools will participate. Students from other local high schools are also expected to join in.

The workshop, which is presented by the California Association of Students Leaders, involves leadership training in the areas of teambuilding, communicating, connecting, taking responsibility, taking risks and expanding the leadership base.

During the workshop, the students will break up into small groups for experimental activities. Student leaders from each site will serve as facilitators with a leadership coach.

Righetti’s Freshman Class Treasurer Amanda Furst and Senior ASB President Jhaicelle Laron say they are “excited” and ready to make the most of the opportunity and knowledge.

“I went to the State Conference and our students learned so much from networking with other high schools,’’ Laron said. “We got a lot of great ideas and I think I learned a lot personally as well.’’

Freshman Class President Aaron Lee is ready to unite with students from other high schools and get “ideas” to bring back to Righetti.

Eleventh-grader Brianna Magana plans to use the workshop to increase her chances of attending a college or university.
“I am looking forward to learning new leadership skills and finding out about opportunities that will help me prepare for college,’’ Magana said.
