Three agriculture students from Santa Maria High School qualified for the 2015 Californian State FFA Speaking Finals during the FFA South Coast Region Speaking Contest at King City High School on March 20th.

Senior Luis Salazar placed 3rd in the Prepared Public Speaking Contest, with his speech titled “The Price Modification”. Senior Aaron

Bernal placed 3rd in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest and freshman Amanda Silva placed 3rd in the FFA Creed Contest. All three will compete during the FFA State Leadership Conference at the California State University, Fresno in late April.

“This is a huge achievement for our chapter and I am more than excited to be competing at State Finals next month,’’ said freshman Amanda Silva.

The South Coast Region also held its Parliamentary Procedure Contest and Santa Maria FFA Novice and Advanced Teams qualified to compete at the State Competition in April.

“Parli-Pro is a skill that will be useful in any industry or career a person finds themselves,’’ said Coach Mrs. Flory-Guerra. “In addition, if a person knows how to use parliamentary procedure, they are sure to be an officer in any organization!”

The South Coast FFA Regional Officer elections were also held. Santa Maria High School junior, Jorge Gonzalez, was elected as Vice President.

Each year more than 5,000 students from California gather at the State Leadership Conference in April to compete in various contests and leadership activities.

There are more than 76,000 FFA members in California and about 1,800 FFA members within the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, according to Shannon Powell of the SMHS Agriculture Department.
