The 8th annual Special Olympics High School Games for Track and Field will be held Thursday, May 28.

Opening ceremonies are set for 9 a.m. at Ernest Righetti High School. The event wraps up with lunch and an athlete dance.

More than 120 athletes from seven school programs are participating. The students are from Righetti, Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria,

Lompoc and Cabrillo high schools. Athletes from the Prepare program (SMJUHSD), SBCEO and CTE Classrooms will also join the healthy competition.

Pioneer Valley Special Education Teacher Jody Dowell said the event represents an important partnership between local high schools and the Northern Santa Barbara County Special Olympics.

“It seeks to promote not only Special Olympics athletics but also to create communities of acceptance for all,’’ Dowell said.
SMJUHSD Associated Student Body members are volunteering.
