If you think a few pennies are not worth much these days, the Santa Maria High School ASB Team begs to differ!
The students began their community service project “Pennies For Patients” for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society this week and plan to wrap it up on March 23 with a goal of raising $2,800.
“I’m excited to lead this community outreach effort and hope to encourage everyone at our school to donate money for this great cause,’’ said student Fernando Orozco.
The Saints placed collection boxes in each classroom and reached out to family and friends. Rallies are planned during lunch where students can request popular music or change annoying music for a donation.
“I could not be more proud of my students,’’ Saint Activity Director Adrian Salazar said. “Watching them get creative and enthusiastic about fundraising for such a worthwhile cause is heartwarming.’’
Olive Garden has teamed up with LLS and will donate a free lunch to the entire class who fundraises the money, Salazar added.
A box for change has also been placed at the District Office.
Last year, the Saints collected and mailed $2,670.62.
