SMHS 11th grade AVID students and teachers made new friends on Mother’s Day when they delivered flowers to new mothers at Marian Hospital and Marian Extended Care.

The community service project involved students from AVID classes taught by Teachers Rebecca Miles and Karen Draper. The tradition was started in 2012 by a former student.

Students Jenifer Lopez and Jacqueline Mendoza stated: “We gave these flowers as a representation of the new life that will blossom into a beautiful garden.’’

Miles said everyone involved discovered that giving to others is a “rewarding community service”.

“To see that our students can brighten someone’s day just by showing a little compassion makes me proud and thankful that human kindness still does exist,’’ Miles added.
