ERHS Students Dominate SBCEO Poetry Slam

Three Righetti High School students dominated the SBCEO Poetry Slam Competition on Thursday, May 4.
The Poetry Slam first place winner was Samantha McDonald, who is in the 10th grade. Natalie Lancor, 11th grade, and Litzy Matematico, 10th grade, both tied for second place.
Samantha wrote, memorized, and recited her original poem titled “Generational Burden” about the environment. Samantha explained, “I wrote about our planet and how we are destroying it. I wrote about the effects on the environment and how we already know how to fix our mistakes, we just need action. I wanted to spread awareness and get people thinking: would you treat your mother how you treat mother earth?”
Samantha also memorized and recited the poem “Hanging Fire” by Audrey Lorde. She shared, “Overall, the event was very inspirational. The energy was wonderful, and it was so cool to listen to everyone else's poems. I was inspired by my AP Environmental Science teacher, Mrs. Branch, who is just opening her students' eyes to so much about the environment.”
